Carbon that had taken hundreds of millions of years to bury began returning to the air within decades. Corals and tree rings put the start of industrial warming in the 1830s, a century before any thermometer network could have detected it, and the rate at which the planet's energy balance is being pushed now exceeds anything of the last twenty thousand years.
Why it matters
This is the moment a species began changing the composition of the atmosphere faster than geology can answer. Every other carbon release on this timeline had a source that eventually ran out or a sink that eventually caught up. This one is being fed deliberately, from reserves that took the Carboniferous to make.
Dating & uncertainty
Coal-fired industry begins in the eighteenth century, but the sustained warming signal emerges in ocean and continental records only in the 1830s, well before instruments could have measured it.
