EARTH × LIFE

The Boring Billion

~1.8 to 0.8 billion years ago

Proterozoic · Paleoproterozoic · Statherian

A billion years passed with no glaciations, no great extinctions and an unusually steady carbon cycle. Oxygen stayed low, nutrients were scarce, and eukaryotes evolved quietly rather than diversifying; somewhere in this long calm, sex and multicellularity were invented.

Why it matters

The quietest stretch in Earth's history is also the one that assembled the complex cell. Boring, at planetary scale, is not the same as idle.

Dating & uncertainty

The name is contested along with the idea. Carbon isotopes are famously flat across the interval, but trace metals in marine pyrite vary considerably, and the period contains the origin of sex, of multicellularity and of the eukaryotic crown group.
