The Ceiling That Held for a Billion Years

Oxygen stayed scarce for most of a billion years: chromium isotopes in sediments of that age put the air at a thousandth of today's level at most. With little oxygen there was little ozone, so more ultraviolet reached the surface. Much of the deep sea stayed anoxic, and the trace metals that enzymes need were scarce in it. Complex cells lived through all of it. What did not appear, in all that time, was an animal.
Why it matters
The longest pause in the history of life is usually blamed on biology being slow to invent. This reading blames the planet instead: the oxygen, the metals and the shielded surface an animal needs were not there, and the pause ends when they arrive.
Dating & uncertaintyDisputed
Chromium isotopes put mid-Proterozoic oxygen below one percent of today's level, which would be too little for animals. Other proxies and models allow several percent. The number matters: it decides whether the delay in animal evolution was an environmental limit or a biological one.
