Six hundred million years in which, as far as anyone can tell, remarkably little happens. They sit at the heart of what the literature calls the boring billion, and the nickname is a confession.
What the evidence shows
Oxygen sits at a low and stable level, the carbon isotope record is flat, and the supercontinent holds together for 600 million years. The calm is in the rocks rather than in the cells: the boring billion is also when eukaryotes appear, when multicellularity and sex begin, and when complex life first diversifies in earnest. Recent work finds real variation in the trace elements once read as uniform, and one reading makes their scarcity the pressure behind those innovations. The era still resists the narrative shape the rest of the timeline takes, and that is a fact about the planet in its own right: any account of its history has to make room for 600 million years in which the chemistry barely moves.
Bounds and conventions
An era named for what it seems to lack, and the name has outlived the evidence for it. What looks like stasis may be the resolution of the record rather than the state of the world, and on the answer hangs whether these 600 million years are a pause in the story or a hole in what we can read of it.
